Are one of the hottest new garden trends and yet it’s one of the oldest. Vertical garden elements can draw attention to a room or disguise an unpleasant view. Vertical gardening with upright structures could be a blessing for apartment dwellers, small-space urban gardeners, and disabled gardeners as well as for gardeners with large, traditional spaces.

Indoors, it is possible to grow small-stature houseplants as perpendicular gardens by creating living walls for a tapestry of color and texture which helps filter indoor air pollutants. In cold-winter climates, houseplants grown in vertical gardens add much-needed humidity in weeks when the furnace operates and dries out the air. Increasingly, hotels and office buildings are incorporating living walls and vertical gardens both inside and outside. Although vertical gardens might need more frequent watering, they contribute to good air flow.

Are you starting a garden this spring? For the last several decades, the sole gardens we have been planting happen to be in containers. But growing food in containers should not be a drawback; urban gardening in containers, containers, and window boxes can yield quite a lot of food.
